Travel: First it makes you speechless, then it turns you into a storyteller.
Wiser words have never been spoken!
We love to travel to faraway places; however, we have come to realize that staycations can be just as rewarding. The essence of traveling is to expose yourself to new experiences that will inadvertently transform you on a subliminal level. You return home bursting at the seams with memories that will last a lifetime. If given a choice between purchasing a trip, or purchasing a tangible item, without a doubt we would opt for the former. Decades from now when you are reflecting on years past, will you remember in fondness the item you splurged on only to tire of a few months in, or will you reminisce on all the travel memories you created? We are guessing the latter is what most would desire, yes? Needless to say, we have made it our mission to form memories that will last the test of time.
Built in 2011, the Omni Hotel in Dallas’ iconic downtown area has quickly proven to be a recognizable Dallas landmark. It will, therefore, come as no surprise that we were bouncing off the walls with excitement when it was confirmed that we would be spending a weekend there. Up until then, our exposure to the majestic hotel had been limited to observing its renowned vibrant light displays from a distance as we drove through downtown Dallas. We had talked about visiting someday; however, no definitive date had ever been locked down. Now, here we were, with a scheduled visit date in our possession, eagerly counting down to the big day. It was all we could talk about for the weeks leading up to it! This would be our first staycation, and we knew without a doubt that it would a story to write home about. We were eagerly anticipating what we knew would be a memorable experience.
It was the weekend before Thanksgiving, the day was Friday, November 17, 2017. After what seemed like eons, the D-day was finally upon us. We felt like little kids on Christmas morning; our excitement knew no bounds! Prior to leaving for the hotel, we placed a call to obtain a check-in status update. Much to our delight, the pleasant front desk staff informed us that preparations were underway for our arrival and that we could check in as early as one o’ clock. That was the green light we needed; we packed essentials we required for the weekend and drove off into the mid-day sun. We glided into the downtown Dallas area, hearts filled with anticipation, aware of the fun-filled stay that awaited us.
Upon arrival at the luxury hotel, we rolled into the expansive driveway, completely immersed in the impeccable sights to behold. We took advantage of the convenient valet parking and handed our keys to the beaming valet driver. We swiftly proceeded to the lobby and we were immediately greeted by welcome sensory stimulation, with sights and sounds galore. The lobby was grand but still exuded a welcoming, home away from home ambiance. It was confirmation that our stay at the Omni Dallas would be an indelible travel memory.
The check-in process was prompt and seamless. We obtained our highly coveted room key and off to the elevator we went. Faster than the speed of lightning, we were on the 16th floor. We inserted the room key into the door, walked in and…
Bliss! Absolute and total bliss! We were immediately teleported to another realm. An awe-inspiring existence that was far beyond anything we could have fathomed. There are no words that can aptly describe the phenomenon that was the magnificent room and its associated view. It was the epitome of architectural perfection, with no creativity spared by the design team! The floor to ceiling windows offered sweeping views of the Dallas skyline and beyond. The decor was second to none, with everything from the chaise longue-style chair to the lamps and fixtures being a sight for sore eyes.
Fun fact: The Omni Dallas has 1,001 rooms and suites arranged over 23 floors.
As if the eye-catching room was not enough, the wonderful Omni staff took it upon themselves to extend VIP treatment to us. On the table was a platter of cheese, fruit, vegetables, chocolate and other delectables, plus a bottle of fine wine to boot. Alongside the feast was a handwritten note welcoming us to the hotel. Can you say attention to detail? We felt honored to be ushered in, in such a warm manner.
After a somewhat brief episode of fully taking in the moment, we set our bags aside and embarked on a room tour. Amenities within the room included: a plethora of reading material, an LCD TV with cable channels, WiFi, an iPod docking station, a Keurig coffee/ tea maker, and room service available upon request. The bathroom complete with a TV within the mirror, was futuristic, to say the least. Is there anything better than getting up to the minute news updates, or catching up on your favorite shows as you prepare for the day?
We extended our exploring beyond the confines of the hotel room and traversed the rest of the regal Omni Dallas. The decor throughout the hotel is a perfect interweaving of contemporary and luxurious, all while still maintaining a welcoming and non-industrial aesthetic appeal. Artistic and comparable to early morning dew, the glass droplet chandeliers were one of our favorite details. The hotel is chock-full of intriguing pieces of art. We were pleased to learn that the Omni Dallas takes pride in showcasing art by hundreds of local artists.
Fun Fact: Once upon a time, the city of Dallas was known for the landmark Pegasus also known as the ‘Flying Red Horse.’ It sat atop what is now known as the Magnolia Hotel. Due to weathering, the original Pegasus was taken down in 1999 and later replaced. The original Pegasus is now on display in front of the Omni Dallas Hotel.
The hotel is equipped with tons of meeting rooms and conference space to meet the event needs of its clients. Of note, the aforementioned are far enough from the hotel’s rooms and suites, that we were undisturbed by the bustling activity. We could tell that a lot of thought went into the layout of the hotel to ensure an optimal guest experience.
We were pleased to learn that the hotel has a host of amenities to offer. Notably, the heated infinity swimming pool with the full-service Uptown Terrace bar in close proximity was a fan favorite. The weather was a tad crisp while we were there; therefore, we didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the pool, but we did take a moment to relax at the scenic terrace.
To further cater to your relaxation needs, the in-house Mokara spa is available, providing facial and body treatments, massages and salon services. For your shopping needs, the Collections art and gift shop is located in the lobby area. Speaking of the lobby, it is a great place to sit back and relax. The most sought-after seats are by the cozy fireplace, which is oh, so inviting!
As darkness descended upon us, we were equally mesmerized by the magnificent lights of the Dallas skyline from our vantage point at the hotel. We ended our first day at the Omni Dallas on a great note, and retired to bed, eager for daylight so we could continue our exploration.
Faster than the blink of an eye, it was our second day at the hotel. There are no words to express the feeling of waking up to the views of the city from what felt like the top of the world. Sitting by the window, sipping coffee and intentionally living in the moment was absolutely rejuvenating.
We later pried ourselves from the room and headed downstairs to indulge in a hearty Texas breakfast. We opted for the in-house, farm to table, Texas Spice restaurant. Known for its finger-licking good food, we knew we were in for quite the feast. It was a buffet-style breakfast spread that we took full advantage of. The chef was gracious and brought us out a delicious french toast creation that we gobbled up in no time. After breakfast, we resumed what we had dubbed “Tour de Omni.”
The Omni Dallas has a variety of restaurants to choose from, guaranteed to please any palate. The Owner’s box is a casual sports bar that is a great place to catch the game or have a chit chat session on the beautiful terrace. Morsel’s is a coffee shop located within the Collections Gift shop in the lobby level. For a posh, upscale vibe, Bob’s Steakhouse, known for its mouth-watering menu, has you covered. Right outside the hotel are additional restaurants to include: Biergarten, Black Ship Little Katana, Cafe Herrera, and Coal Vines. The hotel is strategically positioned, allowing for effortless exploration of the downtown and uptown Dallas sights. Transportation within the Dallas- Fortworth area is available through the Omni’s partnership with GoWynne.
We spent the rest of our second day either relaxing at the hotel or touring the downtown Dallas area. More information about our local tourism will be in a future post.
Time flew right by, and before we knew it, it was Sunday, November 19, 2017, the last day of our Omni Dallas stay. It was bittersweet. We were grateful to still have a few more hours before we had to check out, but we dreaded having to leave the earthly paradise. We headed back to Texas Spice for our last breakfast. Just like the day before, it was a banquet fit for royalty! This time around, the chef surprised us with a uniquely delicious poached egg and avocado creation.
We ate to our fill, bid adieu to the restaurant, and headed back to the room to prepare for our departure. We took a moment to appreciate the exhilarating weekend we had. “Did we really just experience all this?” we pondered. It was surreal.
The checkout process was swift, and we were well on our way back to reality in record time. Though our hotel stay was brief, we are forever changed by the experience. It was unimaginably perfect and far beyond any positive preconceived notion we had. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and are forever grateful to the personable and highly engaged staff who all went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our stay was pleasant and memorable. Thank you Omni Dallas; we will definitely be back! 🙂
