It is bone-chilling cold in my neck of the woods, but that does not mean that my sense of style has been compromised. Au contraire! Winter styles call for a unique level of creativity. It is fairly easy to succumb to the temptation of giving in to donning the warmest clothing available, regardless of how unflattering they may be. However, I implore you to maintain your level of style, regardless of the freezing temperature outside. Cue in layering. Every Winter, I invest in a good amount of thermal wear- leggings, long johns etc that form my foundational layer of clothing. Given the fact that they are form fitting, they do not add extra bulk. Once that’s covered, I can wear pretty much anything I want, within reason of course. For this weeks layering episode, I paired a bold statement jacket with dark secondary pieces. This look is evidence that ‘stylish’ and ‘winter’ can be used in the same sentence.
NB. If the temperatures were to drop further, I would throw on a tailored coat over this look and still maintain a stylish look.
Now that you have an outfit outline, let us delve deeper into the specifics. The vibrant colored African print jacket served as the statement piece, tying all the other outfits pieces together. Can we take a moment and acknowledge how fabulous this jacket is? Let’s get formalities out of the way, why don’t we. The jacket’s name is “Nia” and she is from N’omose Couture, a Dallas-based brand. It goes without saying that I have a particular affinity for small businesses. Primarily because I have a high level of respect for their owner’s drive and determination to venture into what can sometimes be a cutthroat business world. I’m in absolute awe of Merrytime, who doubles as the fashion designer and the owner of the N’omose Couture brand. Her talent is second to none! The fact that she is self-taught is even more awe-inspiring.
As a proud African, I have always been a bonafide fan of all things African prints, known for their dazzling colors and bold patterns. In recent years, African prints have gained popularity outside the confines of African culture, and have been embraced by people from all walks of life. The N’omose Couture brand meets this newfound demand for African print outfits by creating stunning African-inspired garments that speak to the modern woman’s style palate. All pieces are handmade and showcase beautiful, intricate craftsmanship. Their collection includes: jackets, blazers, blouses, skirts, head wraps, shoes, bags and accessories, There are ready to wear pieces, as well as orders customized to your specific requirements.
Back to the’Nia’ Jacket…
The ‘Nia’ jacket has fast become one of my favorite pieces of 2018. Yes, I know the year just began lol. Merely looking at this jacket makes my heart sing; it’s absolutely stunning! Everything from the colors, pattern, cut, fit and design is a win in my books. The jacket molds perfectly onto my frame, despite the fact that it was not a custom-made order, or otherwise tailored to my specific measurements.
As a lover of bright colors and bold patterns, this jacket speaks to me on a subliminal level. I bask in the radiance it emits. The Ankara fabric is of a high quality, guaranteeing years of wear without a loss of the original vibrancy. I’ll add too that the zipper details add an additional layer of sophistication to the jacket.
An additional plus is the fact that the mid-weight fabric allows for year-round wear. It can be worn layered over sweaters in Fall and Winter and worn over a camisole, tank or tee-shirt or lightweight blouse in the warmer Spring and Summer seasons. Also, the jacket can be paired with all manner of outfits and can be worn to a variety of places. Pair it with a pencil dress or skirt and a pair of heels for a workday. Pair it with a pair of jeans and loafers for a preppy-casual date look. Pair it with shorts and a tee for a casual errand day. Your style possibilities are limitless! As you have probably realized by now, the importance of garment versatility is a recurring theme on this blog.
Given the current frigid temperatures in Texas, I chose to pair the jacket with a black turtleneck sweater, a pair of dark wash denim jeans and over the knee boots. I opted for dark colors so ‘Nia’ would be the center of attention like the queen she is. This outfit was a marrying of Afrocentric and cosmopolitan style that I like to call my Afropolitan look. Pretty catchy, right? *chuckle*
I was super excited about ‘Nia’ that I invited Mr. Afrostylicity to the African print party. The only entry requirement was that he had to wear an African print piece too. It helps that we actually like to dress alike lol.
