Frolicking Into Fall In Florals

October 4, 2017

Is it just me, or has the year flown by at supersonic speed? How is it October already? Scratch that, how is Summer already over? Thankfully, we will still get to enjoy warm weather for a few more weeks in my neck of the woods. That being said, I’m making the most of what’s left of the sunny days, before Old Man Winter makes his annual unwanted appearance.

If you’re an avid reader of Afrostylicity posts, you will know that off-shoulder/Bardot looks were all the rage around these parts this past year. I’m talking about everything from tops to jumpsuits, to dresses. If it was an off-shoulder design, it was a win in my books. Well, what better way to cap off the year than by showcasing a few more off-the-shoulder looks. Can I get an ‘oh, yeah!’ *fist pump*

Fun Fact: Did you know that the off-shoulder/Bardot look was quite popular as early as the 19th century?

If you are new to the Afrostylicity party, let me school you on why my love for Bardot/off-shoulder tops is second to none. I’ll sum it up in one sentence: They are fun and flirty, all while being sophisticated and classy. What’s not to love about this meshing of options?  Plus, even if your arms are not as toned as you would like, your shoulders will always look good.  Show off those shoulders, girl!

Fun Fact: The term “Bardot” is coined after the style icon Brigitte Bardot who popularized the off-shoulder style in the 1960’s.

I purchased this white floral dress months ago; however, believe it or not, I had not had a chance to wear it until fairly recently. You see, a clothes-hiding fairy that resides within my closet took it upon itself to displace my new dress soon after purchase.  It wasn’t until a recent closet downsizing episode that  I re-discovered and rekindled my love for the dress. Cheers to getting rid of unnecessary collections in one closet, and only keeping that which will be worn, aye?

Back to the dress…

Besides the off-shoulder design, I’m particularly fond of the midi length, the floral print, and the form-fitting cut of this beauty.  That pretty much sums up the whole dress, I’d say. Long story short, this dress is one of my favorites of the year. It’s a simple dress, but a head-turner nonetheless. The combination of cut, fit and length gives off a retro style icon vibe that is a major selling point.

NB. The fabric is lightweight and clings to the skin, therefore, I recommend wearing a body shaper within for an overall smoother silhouette.

What is an outfit without footwear and accessories, right? This time around, I opted for a pair of red, block-heel sandals to complete the look. In combination with the dress, the shoes provided just the amount of fun and elegant simplicity. The tassel detail on the heels gives off that extra dose of movement as you sashay until kingdom come. My accessories were kept to an absolute bare minimum, given my desire for the dress and shoes to be the center of attraction. Shine through uninhibited, oh ye perfect dress! A rose gold watch and a purple clutch sealed the deal without stealing the show.

This is a simple but versatile dress that can be worn to all manner of occasions, from the casual get-together to the dressed up shindig. So pretty much anything from lunch to a wedding on the events spectrum. The secret lies in the shoes you choose to pair the dress with. Slip into a pair of sky-high stilettos and you’re ready for a night on the town. Slide into a pair of wedge sandals and you’re all set for a more laid-back event. Throw on a pair of sandals and you’re all set for an evening walk along a lakefront. Toss your shoes to the side, and dig your toes into the sand on a beach stroll. Can you tell my mind is always thinking up different ways I can make a clothing piece work for me?

Style Hint: When deciding on a clothing piece, ask yourself if you will be able to get a ton of wear out of it. If you are unable to style it in more than one way, resist the urge to purchase the item on a “someday I can wear this’ whim. Trust me, your wallet and closet space will thank you in the long run.

This is yet another effortlessly sophisticated look, proudly sponsored by glistening shoulders and sculpted clavicles. Best believe I will still be rocking this beauty when the temperatures dip even further. Why? Because I can *chuckle* I will simply throw on some thermal wear,  slip into a coat, lather on some cold screen lotion on my legs and I’ll be good to go. I came to slay. That is all. 😀

As always, I’m here to share style insider secrets with you. To simplify your shopping process, I have this outfit and previously showcased outfits in one place. You can shop the entire look here.

Now go forth and be dapper!

I do like the off the shoulder look. You do look great in it. I did not know that they referred to it as a Bardot look. But I would have known who the inspiration for that was as I am very aware of the great actress.
