Sassy Street Style

January 24, 2018

Is it just me, or does it feel like January has 900 days?  It might have something to do with the dreary weather that we have had to deal with the past few weeks. Well, thankfully the month is finally drawing to a close, which hopefully marks the dawn of a new era, weather-wise at least. What cheers me up when the weather is as gloomy as it has been, is my nearest and dearest friend- fashion. For as long as I can remember, dressing up has always been a source of absolute joy for me. Endorphins are released to the tenth power, resulting in an overall happy-go-lucky sensation that I am enveloped by completely. This week’s outfit selection process was no exception–marrying the individual clothing pieces to create this sassy-chic outfit was an exhilarating experience!

Black is a staple in my autumn and winter closet. If you remember anything from science lessons from years past, black absorbs light and converts it into heat. Therefore, I gravitate towards darker colors in cooler months. I wanted an all-black look with a pop of color to add an element of excitement to the overall look. I also knew that I wanted to add a dose of fun to what would otherwise be a somber look. After a brief deliberation, I identified clothing pieces from my closet that I would use to create the look I envisioned. The end result was a fusion of street style and sassiness. It is an edgy look while still exuding a chic vibe.

Let’s delve into the specifics of the outfit…

I elected the graphic print bodysuit as the foundation upon which the rest of the outfit would be built. The ‘Queen’ graphic speaks to the non-verbal message I wanted to relay. It was a unique way to boldly announce to the world how I view myself. Who do I think I am? A Queen! Put some respect on it! (lol). For all intents and purposes, this bodysuit can double up as beachwear. Let all the revelers at the beach know that a queen has graced them with her presence. *giggles* The bodysuit has a stunning racerback detail that I have a soft spot for. Additional features I love are the snap on buttons, allowing for easy wear, and the lightweight fabric.

It was an effortless decision to pair the bodysuit with black denim. You can seriously never go wrong with black denim! It serves as a blank canvas upon which you can create a lookbook masterpiece. You can style it in all manner of ways, and pair it with a wide array of clothing items. I particularly love the subtle sophistication high-waisted denim pants emit, and the added bonus of an hourglass silhouette. We have talked about this in previous posts, remember? Well, I will reiterate my statement for the benefit of those who are new to this blog.

Recap: High waisted bottoms i.e. pants, skirts, shorts, aid in further accentuating your waist-to-hip ratio by defining your waist. This results in an hourglass shape that most covet. Now, let’s get back to regularly scheduled programming.

This pair of black denim was my number one choice to pair the bodysuit with. The versatility of black denim goes without saying. For this look, I wanted a duality of edgy and chic- mission accomplished!

A leather jacket is yet another wardrobe staple. While I have a couple of classic black pieces, I wanted to step outside the neutral colors box, and play with other crayons. This burgundy number was definitely several steps away from the ordinary dark-hued colors I typically don at this time of the year. I chose it because I wanted to add a pop of color to the outfit.  The sleeves are cut slightly below th elbow, a feature I was drawn to as it gave off an rolled up sleeve-like vibe. Additionally, it is a fitted jacket; therefore, it is ultra feminine.

Every outfit needs the perfect pair of footwear, yes? Over the knee boots have been my go-to style this past autumn and now winter. They add an additional layer of warmth and a dash of sassy spice.  I chose a pair of black boots to minimize the contrast with the denim and to maintain the bodysuit’s place as the center of attraction. I love that the boot’s heels are sturdy and comfortable, allowing for all-day wear.

Let’s talk about accessories

As a self-proclaimed chair lady of the hat committee, it was inevitable that I would don one of my favorite hats. It’s a wide-brimmed fedora hat that has been on style repeat this season. I’ve worn it more times than I care to remember. *chuckles* It is a unique hat in its own right, and adds an extra portion of sauce to this casual-chic outfit.

I kept my jewelry relatively simple, opting for a gold chain link bracelet and a rose gold watch. One would not typically place a brooch on a leather jacket, but this girl did! You see, it was symbolic. What does my bodysuit say? Queen! What is my brooch shaped like? A bee! What do you get when you combine the two? Queen Bee! As I’m sure you are aware, the queen bee controls her colony of worker bees and drones. Yet another science lesson reminder. You are welcome. *wink* To complete the look, I threw a gold chain strap, tan purse over my shoulder, and voila!

The versatility of this look is limitless; you can wear it to all manner of places. If your workplace has a non-restrictive dress code, this is an outfit you can wear on casual Friday. I would, however, recommend trading the over knee boots for a pair of ankle booties. You can wear the look as is, spicy boots and all, to tons of other events. Think brunch or lunch with friends, to a day party, to a casual meet up or date night. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Feel free to be creative. This is an outfit that is guaranteed to set you apart from the crowd in a not so subtle way!
