Hands up if you’ve ever been warned to steer clear of horizontal stripes. I’ll be the first to admit that for a good amount of my adult life, I was fearful of horizontal stripes like some are of the mythical boogeyman. Why, you ask? Well, I subscribed to the notion that all horizontal stripes would have an unflattering, widening effect on one’s silhouette. Fast forward to the age of enlightenment when I discovered that not all stripes are the same; they are not equal. In my personal experience, I have found that lean, horizontal stripes work in my favor. Specifically, lean stripes on a pencil-type skirt or dress, or a fitted top. I’ve found that the horizontal stripes and A-line type skirts or dresses combination do not work in my favor.
There is something about lean horizontal stripes that tickles my fancy. Perhaps it’s because the thin lines serve as an optical illusion that will trick one’s eyes and divert attention from any flaws, perceived or otherwise. Wide, horizontal stripes draw more visual attention and may not be particularly flattering, in my humble opinion. To each his/her own though, yes?
On to this week’s look…
This simplistically chic, gorgeous skirt from Romwe is figure hugging, with a high waist that guarantees an hourglass look, optical illusion or otherwise *chuckle* The fabric is form-fitting but stretchy; therefore, it will conform to your curves in all the right places. Additionally, I love the slightly below-the-knee length as it gives off a classy, sophisticated vibe.
I chose to pair the skirt with an off -the-shoulder black top for a sassy but classy effect. There is something about off-shoulder looks that is covertly sensual. Somehow something as simple as exposing one’s shoulders is captivating. *mind boggling*
I chose to pair the classic black and white outfit with vibrant mustard yellow, open toed heels, a classic gold watch and a black and kente fabric accent bag. The bag is one of my treasure finds from a trip I made to Ghana last year. Speaking of which, a Ghana travel post is long overdue. But I digress…
This skirt is so easy to style, and unbelievably versatile. In the future I can pair it with a t-shirt and sneakers for a casual look; a blazer, tank top and a pair of stiletto heels for a business casual look; a button-down shirt and a pair of loafers for a preppy casual look…the possibilities are limitless.
As usual, I look forward to sharing my style finds with you. Today is no exception, so here goes…
