Howdy friends! It is our hope that you are all doing well during this current era of social distancing. That being said, when life throws curveballs, we’ve got to roll with the punches and make the best of the situation. The lack of a social life outside the home setting has forced us to think outside the box when planning date nights. It takes a bit of creativity but yes, it’s still possible to have a unique date night experience while sheltering in place. The following are a few travel-inspired date night ideas you could consider.

  1. Destination Dinner Together

Fancied traveling to a vacation destination and relishing food unique to that space? Well, how about recreating some recipes at home? Identify a country you have visited, or would love to visit, and create a dinner experience based on that. This can be a meal you both cook together, using the preparation time as a fun bonding session.  Alternatively, you can order in a meal from your local restaurants via third-party services like DoorDash, GrubHub, UberEats, etc.

For example: If you’ve always wanted to go to Greece, you can cook or order Greek dishes, and for ambiance, you can have scenic slideshow images or videos of Greece playing on your television. Sounds like fun, right?

  1. Home Spa Date Night

Spa days at hotels are one of our favorite ways to relax and rejuvenate while on vacation. Thankfully, the utter bliss associated with spa days can be recreated at home. It’s fairly easy to turn your space into a spa for the night. Slip into robes and slippers and set yourself up for an evening of home manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages. All this while enjoying champagne and lite bites from a charcuterie board. Is that ambient music we hear playing in the background?

        3. Wine Tasting at Home

Dreaming of wineries in far-off places like Tuscany? Well, you can recreate a winetasting experience right within the confines of your home. Try buying wines that you’ve never had before from places you have either previously traveled to, or that are on your must-visit list. It’s a great way to get a taste of a wide array of travel destinations – literally.

  1. Virtual Museum Tour

Are museum tours high on your priority list when you travel? You’ll be pleased to learn that there are a sizeable number of virtual museum tours you can enjoy on your date night at home. Google Arts & Cultures has partnered with over 500 museums and galleries located all over the world, that you can tour from your home.

  1. Movies and Chill

Dreaming of a vacation in Paris? Watching a French movie can momentarily quench your thirst for travel. Immersing yourself in movie scenes can give you a sense of teleporting to your destination of choice.  Streaming services like Netflix have international film categories that you can peruse. Alternatively, instead of a movie, you could watch YouTube travel vlogs and experience places vicariously through other people who have been there.

  1. Airbnb Virtual Online Experience

Airbnb is a trailblazer when it comes to offering tons of virtual travel experiences that you can enjoy while social distancing. Officially known as Airbnb Online Experiences, it is a platform that offers digital classes and activities that are led by local hosts. You can learn Flamenco dance, enjoy a concert from Iceland, attend a skincare workshop, and so much more! Picture yourself in the heart of a new culture, albeit from a distance.

  1. Learn a New Language

Perhaps you have planned a future trip to a country whose primary language isn’t your native tongue? Signing up to learn a new language, and taking a lesson or more together can be a great bonding experience for you and your significant other. Rosetta Stone and Babbel are some examples of language learning services you can consider looking into.

  1. Travel Craft Project

Reminiscing on travel experiences you enjoyed in the past? Why not create a date night built upon a foundation of your travel memories. This could be via activities like scrapbooking or organizing souvenirs you’ve collected during your travels. This can be a great way to walk down memory lane, as you anticipate future travel experiences.

  1. Virtual Reality Travel

Nothing beats the use of technology to virtually tour hotels as well as travel experiences around the world. Imagine experiencing a luxurious hotel in a place like Dubai, all while you’re at home.  You can access these virtual tours on YouTube, by using search terms like virtual reality travel, VR 360, virtual reality 4K, etc.  You can also check out the virtual reality apps on Oculus

NB. These are best viewed with a Virtual Reality (VR) headset or Google Cardboard

  1. Plan Your Next Trip

Finally, planning your next vacation or staycation can make for a fun date night. Create a bucket list and identify what destination(s) you would like to check off first. Find out as much as you can about the place(s), and start creating a draft itinerary. You’ll be that much closer to turning your travel list from a dream into reality. Your future self will thank you for it.

In summation, there is so much travel-related fun to be had while at home—your only limit is your imagination. We hope you find the ideas we shared useful, and that you are inspired to create a travel at-home date night. Feel free to share any additional ideas you may have in the comments. Now, go forth and travel at home!
