Ah, vacations! What would life be without them? Whether it’s a week away to an exotic location; or a weekend getaway close to home, time away from the monotonous hustle and bustle of everyday life is always welcome in our books. Two weekends ago, we did just that. Armed with snacks, and an audio playlist to be reckoned with, we set forth on an excitement-laden road trip from Dallas to Houston. Approximately four hours of tires to tarmac later, we pulled up to the entrance of what would be our short-term home- Omni Houston Hotel at Westside. As the name discloses, the hotel is in the West part of Houston, close enough to the hub of the city and tourist attractions.
The check in process was seamless, with the staff being attentive, inviting and eager to assist. We particularly took a liking to Presley, the friendly young man who helped us with our luggage, and also doubled as the shuttle driver on the night of our arrival. Speaking of shuttles, the hotel shuttle is available to hotel guests at no additional charge and can transport you to destinations within 5 miles of the hotel.
From the onset, we were impressed by the majestic hotel; a perfect mix of man-made artifacts, intertwined with nature. The lobby area boasts a magnificent atrium, and a pond chock-full of Japanese Koi fish. If you feel inclined to feed the fish, the hotel staff at the front desk can provide you with fish food.
The pond extends beyond the confines of the hotel lobby to the outside of the building. There the marrying of liquid and solid continues, with a perfectly erected art piece positioned in the midst of the waterbody. Gazing at it draws you into a realm of serenity. You can tell that quite a bit of thought went into creating a stress relieving and peace receiving zone for guests. Good job, Omni!
Did we mention that we were completely enamored by the captivating beauty of the nature-infused lobby? It is breathtakingly stunning! If you’re a lover of the great outdoors, there is enough greenery within the hotel to make your heart leap for joy.
Whoever was responsible for the interior decorating of the hotel deserves a pat on the back, a firm handshake and a monetary bonus for good measure. The decor should be in a glossy feature in an award winning interior design magazine. It really is a sight for sore eyes! Our experience taking in all the hues, textures, shapes and designs was akin to exploring an art gallery. It was sensory stimulation with resultant endorphin release. Hats off to you, Omni decor team!
Not pictured here, the elevators are transparent, allowing for a 360° aerial panoramic view of the hotel as you ascend to higher floor levels. Additional features the hotel has are a heated outdoor swimming pool and a fitness center. We did not get a chance to use either one; however, we caught a glimpse of the swimming pool as we explored the hotel property. Lovers of water will be pleased to know that the pool is a decent size, with a poolside bar to boot. Imagine dipping into the pool for an evening swim after a long day of exploring Houston. Pure bliss!
The rooms are a decent size and come equipped with amenities needed for a restful stay. These included 24-hour room service, daily housekeeping, a mini-bar, and snacks (at an added cost), comfortable beds and an overall relaxing atmosphere.
Did someone mention food? You’ll be pleased to learn that the hotel has a selection of dining options on-site. There are two main dining areas: The Cafe on the Lake and The Black Gold Bar. The Cafe on the Lake is a sit-down restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the added option of brunch on Sunday. We had the opportunity to eat breakfast there and enjoyed the wide variety of food choices at an affordable cost. We spent an average of $20 each for a fully loaded meal.
If you prefer a more casual pub-like ambiance, The Black Gold Bar is the place for you. It is reminiscent of yesteryear, given the retro saloon-style, Old Wild West vibe. We didn’t have a chance to dine there; however, we loved the atmosphere there when we stopped by briefly.
Fun fact: the hotel has a happy hour in the afternoon during which free beverages (including champagne) are offered to guests. Imagine walking into the hotel to check in and being welcomed with a cool glass of champagne. Yes, please!
Note that you can also make reservations to host your event at the hotel. As a matter of fact, there were two weddings on the weekend we were there. We can only imagine how exceptionally beautiful the wedding photos will be, given the stunning hotel backdrops.
The checkout process was hassle-free, with no additional charges added to our tab. We were sent off with smiles and overall great customer service. Just as we had been assisted to offload our luggage upon arrival, the hotel staff helped us load our car for departure. It was an exceptional guest experience, to say the least!
