Introduction to Majlis Lamu Resort

The Majlis Resort is a luxury hotel situated on Ras Kitau Bay of Manda Island, across from the village of Shela.

Good To Know: Shela Village is on Lamu Island.

Before it became a resort, Majlis was a private family home. The owners chose the name ‘Majlis’ to reflect the cultural concept of a traditional gathering space.

‘Majlis’ is an Arabic word that refers to a sitting room or assembly area where people meet to discuss matters of common interest.

How To Get To Majlis Lamu

Based on our experience, the best (and probably safest) way to get to Lamu is by plane. The Lamu Airport (also referred to as Manda Airport) is located on Manda Island in the Lamu Archipelago.

Tip: The Lamu airport code is LAU

  • Fly from Mombasa: You can fly from Mombasa (MBA) to Lamu.
  • Fly from Malindi: Direct flights from Malindi (MYD) to Lamu are available.

How To Get From Lamu Airport to Majlis Lamu

The Majlis Resort is located on Manda Island (as is the airport); however, you must get on a ferry/boat from the airport to the resort. The journey will take approximately 15 minutes.

The reservation team at Majlis Resort can organize boat transportation for you. Alternatively, if you haven’t booked a transfer through them in advance, you’ll find boat operators and transportation services available right at the airport.

Tip: If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking anti-motion sickness medication/ comfort measures before the boat ride. The water can be choppy, and the boat ride pretty rough.

The Ambience at Majlis Lamu Resort

The resort’s location provides direct access to Manda Beach, with panoramic views of the front of Shela Village and the Indian Ocean.

The stunning white sand beach stretches before the resort, its color shifting depending on the time of day, from brilliant white under the midday sun to soft gold during the magical hours of sunrise and sunset.

The resort’s Swahili-style design elements feature large windows that let in natural light, intricately carved wooden details, and traditional architectural motifs.

Speaking of aesthetics, we were particularly drawn to the unique art throughout the property. It was a fascinating mesh of modern and indigenous-inspired pieces.

Scattered throughout the property are intimate seating areas thoughtfully arranged to maximize both privacy and views. Here, you can relax on plush cushions while listening to the gentle lapping of waves as palm trees sway in the coastal breeze.

Our Experience at Majlis Lamu

Our visit to Lamu had been months in the making. We decided on Majlis Resort as our hotel of choice based on reviews and personal accounts of people we knew had previously stayed there.

Arrival and First Impressions

Landing at Manda Airport felt like stepping into another world. After deplaning, we made our way to the airport’s exit, where we met the guide Majlis Resort had arranged to meet us. He greeted us warmly and led us on a short walk to the nearby jetty, where a wooden boat was waiting to whisk us away to the resort.

The contrast between leaving the skyscrapers of Nairobi just an hour ago and now standing on this rustic pier, watching boats drift by, was striking.

The boat ride was a tad unsettling, given the choppy water and small vessel we were in, but thankfully, it was only a 15-minute experience.

Tip: If you are prone to motion sickness, sit in the middle of the boat, where it’s more stable, and keep your eyes on the horizon. We also recommend wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from water splashes and keeping your valuables in a waterproof bag.

As our boat approached the white sandy shores of Manda Island, we were immediately enveloped by the calm atmosphere.

We stepped onto the powder-white sand, where we were received with smiles by the resort staff, who whisked away our luggage and guided us to the reception.

As we walked across the Majlis grounds, the lush greenery and stunning architecture created a unique ambiance that felt both exotic and inviting.

At the reception, we each enjoyed a much-needed, cool drink as we completed the check-in process. A resort staff member then escorted us to our room, our little slice of the proverbial Kenyan coastal pie.

Our Room at Majlis Resort

The arrival set the tone for what would be an unforgettable stay. Our Deluxe Room was the ultimate definition of well-thought-out!

The room’s design brilliantly blended Swahili architecture with modern luxury. Think intricately carved wooden furniture, crisp white linens, and local artwork.

The king-size bed was adorned with soft linens and a roll-down netting to keep pesky tropical mosquitos at bay. The bed faced French doors that opened onto a private veranda, offering spectacular views of the beach.

Relaxation and Activities

The food at Majlis deserves its own segment. Buffet-style breakfast at the main restaurant became our daily ritual. Fresh tropical fruits, just-baked pastries, made-to-order eggs, and a host of other delectable. All this while appreciating the stunning coastal views. Oh, and the sunset dinners were outstanding; we still dream about the fresh seafood!

Our days flowed with an easy rhythm. Mornings found us swimming in the pool or walking the endless beach. Afternoons offered adventures like off-shore excursions to the nearby famous floating bar. Nights found us watching sunsets and stargazing.

stunning views of manda beach

We ventured out on a fascinating guided tour of Lamu Old Town, where we traversed the maze-like streets and discovered hidden gems.

Pro Tip: Book the early morning walking tour to Lamu Town. It’s the perfect time to explore before the heat sets in. Plus, the photo opportunities of the historic town coming to life are incredible.

What set Majlis apart was how it balances luxury with authenticity. We were not just at a beach resort; we were experiencing a slice of Swahili coastal life.

Everything felt genuinely connected to the location, from the traditional architecture to the staff’s warm hospitality.

Our Majlis Lamu Departure

Four days felt entirely too short. As we boarded the boat for our departure, watching the resort fade into the distance, we looked forward to our return. The beauty of our Majlis Resort experience was in slowing down and letting the laidback coastal rhythm take over.
