Well, yes and no. Yes, in the sense that if that is the only time you can allot to exploration, you can still have amazing experiences.
No, because the city has so much to offer, and it’s impossible to squeeze all the adventures into a few days.
But the logic here is that a short time is better than no time, right?
Please note that this travel guide suggests a weekend itinerary, but it can be adapted for any day of the week. Be aware that some locations may have limited hours of operation during the week.

36 Hours in Minneapolis Travel Guide: Friday Evening
We recommend booking a hotel (or vacation rental) in downtown Minneapolis for easy access to some of the best things the city has to offer. These include iconic landmarks, top-notch restaurants (some are recipients of the prestigious James Beard Award), notable live music venues, and community events.
Warehouse District
After checking into your hotel and settling in, head to the trendy Warehouse District (also known as the North Loop neighborhood).
This area has a mix of repurposed historic industrial brick buildings that now house a variety of restaurants, bars, and local shops. It is a great place to explore the local food scene and get a feel of the city’s vibe.
Dining Recommendation
Minneapolis has impressive dining options that range from local eateries to internationally renowned restaurants.
If you decide not to eat at the Warehouse District, we recommend Eat Street as the perfect place to experience a wide variety of restaurants representing cuisines from around the world.
After-Dinner Drinks & Nightlife
First Avenue
After dinner, walk to First Avenue for live music, or grab a nightcap at a rooftop bar in the North Loop.
Fun Fact: The legendary artist Prince frequently performed at First Avenue. Several memorable scenes from the film Purple Rain were also shot at this historic venue.

After breakfast, head to the Chain of Lakes, which are close to downtown. Here you can enjoy a casual stroll as you soak in the scenic sights.
Gold Medal Park- Optional
Alternatively (or additionally), venture out to the Gold Medal Park for stunning city and river views.
This spot features a unique mound and spiral walkway and is a fan favorite for early walks or yoga on the grass.
Saturday Late Morning to Early Afternoon
Mill City Museum
Make your way to the Mill City Museum, on the Mississippi riverfront, to explore Minneapolis’ flour milling history.
The museum also has amazing rooftop views, highlighting the city’s blend of old and new.
Guthrie Theatre
Head to Guthrie Theatre, a world-renowned performing arts center. It has modern architecture and spectacular views from the cantilever bridge overlooking the Mississippi River.
The Guthrie Theater also has public spaces to explore, dining options, and a gift shop.
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Experience the city’s artistic side at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. It is a famous urban park that has over 40 large-scale sculptures, the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry, and plenty of picnic space.

Walker Art Center- Optional
If time allows, pop in to the adjacent Walker Art Center for contemporary art exhibitions.
Saturday Afternoon
Lake of Isles
About 1 mile away is the Lake of the Isles. You can enjoy a scenic walk, all while taking in views of the lake’s two islands, beautiful historic homes, and peaceful natural surroundings.
Minneapolis Institute of Art
Later, head over to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to immerse yourself in the extensive art collections.
Tip: Admission to the Minneapolis Institute of Art is FREE.
After immersing yourself in the art, venture outside to further explore 3rd Avenue South. This area has local attractions like Stevens Square Park, public art installations, and murals.
American Swedish Institute- Optional
About 2 miles away from 3rd Ave S is the American Swedish Institute. It is housed in the landmark Turnblad Mansion, also known as “Minneapolis’ only castle.”
In addition to being an architectural masterpiece worth touring, it is a great place to learn about Swedish culture through interactive exhibitions, art galleries, language classes, crafts, cooking, and the on-site FIKA Café.
Midtown Global Market
For lunch, try Midtown Global Market, an international food court for an array of flavors.
Mall of America
After lunch, head over to the Mall of America in the nearby town of Bloomington.
But, this is not Minneapolis, you wonder?
Correct, it is not in Minneapolis proper. However, you can’t make it all the way to Minneapolis without venturing out to the largest mall in North America, not just the United States.
Plus, did we mention that there is no sales tax on clothing and shoes in Minnesota?
But beyond shopping, the mall has a ton of activities you can engage in, like riding roller coasters at the Nickelodeon Universe theme park, or sampling creative eats from the expansive selection of restaurants.
Tip: If you don’t have a car (or don’t want to deal with traffic), a better way to get to the Mall of America is by light rail. Take the METRO Blue Line light rail from downtown Minneapolis (starting at Government Plaza or other downtown stations) directly to the Mall of America station in Bloomington. The ride takes about 40 minutes and costs $2.50.
Saturday Evening
Bryant Lake Bowl
For dinner and entertainment, head out to Bryant Lake Bowl. It is a unique Minneapolis spot that combines bowling, a restaurant, and a 90-seat theater.
You can enjoy made-from-scratch food and craft cocktails while watching comedy shows, live music, or other performances that happen almost every night.
