Public Transport in Zanzibar

Dala-Dala

Dala dala mini local buses are the backbone of local public transport in Zanzibar, and are an affordable way to get around.

These colorful vehicles operate from central points, including Darajani bus station in Zanzibar City (Stone Town) and other minibus stations. Expect to pay in Tanzanian shillings (around 500-1,500 TSH for most routes).

While dala dala transportation involves several stops and potential police checkpoints, if you are an adventurous traveler, it can be a fun way to experience the local way of life.

However, consider that transporting large luggage on a dala dala can be challenging, and travel times are longer than those of private alternatives.

Local Taxis

Local taxis are cars you can hail in town or at taxi stands. Fares are typically negotiated on the spot, usually paid in cash, and service quality can vary. Always agree on the price before your ride.

Motorbike Taxis (Boda-Boda)

Motorcycle taxis, locally known as boda boda, are a popular option for shorter distances. They are an affordable option for short trips around town.

You can find them along the side of the road throughout the main island.

Again, if you are an adventurous traveler, getting around on a boda boda can be an exciting travel experience. However, exercise caution as they can be very dangerous.

Prioritize your safety by insisting on wearing a helmet and avoiding them during the rainy season when roads become slippery.

Tuk tuks

Tuk-tuks, known locally as bajajis, are another budget-friendly option to get around Zanzibar’s towns and beach areas. You’ll find them easily in places like Stone Town, Nungwi, and Paje.

They are convenient for short trips and navigating narrow streets. Most tuk-tuks seat up to 3 people, and fares are usually negotiable. Just agree on the price before your ride!

Private Transport in Zanzibar

Private Taxis

If you are seeking comfort and convenience, then private taxis are a popular choice. They are pre-booked, often arranged through hotels or online.

Private taxis have fixed prices, better reliability, and usually higher comfort and safety.

For airport transport, taxi drivers typically gather at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and major hotels.

Hotel Private Transfers

Some hotels offer shuttle services (often at an additional cost) to transport you from the airport to the hotel and back.

Tour Shuttles

Tour companies also provide local transportation to and from activities and often offer the best prices for group bookings.

Tip: Ensure you do your due diligence and confirm the terms of service with your tour operator, as transportation to and from your accommodation is not always complimentary, and you could incur additional charges.

Car Rentals and Self-Driving

Getting a rental car in Zanzibar is a good option if you want the ultimate freedom to explore and discover historic landmarks, hidden gems, and more.

Note that main island roads are generally well maintained; however, secondary routes, especially in rural areas, will require extra cautious driving.

Tip: You will need to obtain a long-term tourist vehicle permit to drive in Zanzibar.

If you are uncomfortable driving (or prefer not to) in Zanzibar, you can still rent a car and hire a private driver to take you around.

Water Transport in Zanzibar

Dhows and Other Boats

While you may use land transport for most travel in Zanzibar, a boat ride will let you enjoy scenic views and reach places you can’t get to by road.

You can take traditional dhows to nearby islands like Prison Island, sandbanks like Nakupenda, or snorkeling spots such as Mnemba Atoll.

Tip: Always choose reputable boat operators and verify that they have the necessary safety gear.

Ferries

For further exploration, you can take a ferry from Stone Town to Pemba Island. Sailings are twice a week, the trip takes about 4 to 5 hours, and costs around $55–$70 one way.

Tip: Book ferry tickets in advance, especially during high season, and arrive at the port early for boarding.

Air Transport in Zanzibar

You can easily reach most places on Zanzibar by road or boat. The only place you could consider flying to is Pemba Island if you prefer not to deal with sea travel. For context, a flight from Zanzibar Island to Pemba Island is approximately 30 minutes compared to the 4-5 hours it takes for a boat ride.
