History of Thompson Dallas
The Thompson Dallas hotel occupies what is one of Dallas’ most notable historic landmarks — The National building. The Evolution of Thompson Dallas
The building has been renovated to offer an updated setting with modern amenities. It is now a luxurious mixed-use development that houses the Thompson Dallas hotel, residences, restaurants, an art gallery, and retail stores.
When did the Thompson Hotel in Dallas Open?

Our Experience at Thompson Dallas Luxury Hotel
Yes, we are Dallas residents, and yes, Thompson Dallas is a Dallas hotel. However, we can honestly state that while staying at the property, we felt like we had been teleported to a faraway locale.
The hotel experience embodies the true definition of a getaway destination. It is designed to be an escape from the mundane and monotonous, and a step into an urban luxury oasis.
Our Hotel Suite
Let’s start by stating that we absolutely loved our suite! Our not-so-humble-abode at Thompson Dallas was an Elm Suite. It was a 714 square feet suite designed like a luxury apartment, complete with spectacular views of the downtown Dallas skyline thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The overall vibe was reminiscent of a Manhattan, New York City experience.
The suite had a separate cozy living room and mini-bar, and a bedroom with a king-sized bed, a workstation, a small couch, and decor and fixtures to die for! We particularly loved the fact that there were hardwood floors. A welcome change from carpets that are the hotel industry norm.
Our bathroom had a standalone shower with both a waterfall shower head as well as a detachable spray handle. Oh and, full-size shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel for the win!

Thompson Dallas On-site Restaurants and Bars
There are a wide variety of great restaurants available to guests at Thompson Dallas. These are also open to the public as well.
Nine at the National
Nine at the National, which is located on the 9th floor of Thompson Dallas, was our go-to breakfast spot during our stay at Thompson Dallas. Upon arrival, we were led to our table of choice by the friendly hostess.
There are tons of seating areas available, either within the art-filled dining room or outdoor on the patio by the picturesque hotel pool.
We chose to dine indoors where we enjoyed the hearty self-service buffet and overall great breakfast options. Breakfast offerings include everything from continental breakfast staples like pastries, to full-on hearty choices like bacon and eggs.
Note that Nine at the National only serves breakfast and lunch. All-day offerings include starters like the Mediterranean salad and entrees like the famous Thompson Burger. Weekends feature their famous Cloud Nine brunch, with the Pink Frose being a fan favorite.
Tip: If you choose to order room service (in-room dining) the menu options will be from Nine at the National.
Catbird
Catbird is an on-site restaurant bar and lounge, also on the ninth floor of the hotel, open for evening merrymaking. It is a great spot for happy hour drinks, shared small plates, dinner, late-night bites, and drinks.
It is a quirky spot that the social media pundits would aptly refer to as “Instagram-worthy” given the numerous photo ops. We loved the fun, playful vibe, paired with all the unique art displayed throughout the space.
Catbird is a lot larger than it appears to be at first glance. As we explored the space, we were genuinely surprised by how far out it extended. In addition to the indoor seating, there is an expansive rooftop terrace for outdoor seating available. It’s no wonder that it is fast becoming the go-to Saturday night spot!
Monarch Dallas
Let’s just start by declaring that Monarch Dallas is hands down the best eatery in Dallas with an unobstructed aerial view of Dallas (in our opinion). Located on the 49th floor, it is a jaw-dropping restaurant that is in a league of its own!
Prior to our overnight stay at Thompson Dallas, we had dined at Monarch Dallas. On that visit, we were on the north side of the restaurant and did not have window seats. This time around, we enjoyed the breathtaking sights of Dallas while positioned at one of the best tables in the restaurant. Can you say stunning cityscape views for days? Good times!
Specific to food, Monarch Dallas is a wood-fired modern Italian restaurant offering delectable handmade pasta, fresh seafood, succulent steaks, and more. Additionally, their drink menu is chock-full of palate-stimulating options.
Based on our experience, the following are tips to ensure that you too have an epic Monarch Dallas experience.
Tips for Dining at Monarch Dallas
- The restaurant is a hot spot and reservations may be required weeks in advance; therefore, plan accordingly. Without reservations, you can still enjoy drinks at the bar on a first-come, first-service basis.
- We highly recommend that you request window seats when making a reservation. Trust us, you will thank us later!
- A day (or a few days) before your reservation, you will receive a text message from Monarch, requesting you to confirm your reservation. You will also be asked to share any dietary restrictions and information about whether you are celebrating anything in particular. This is to ensure that the staff is fully prepared for your arrival and that they can offer you the best experience. We particularly loved this aspect of their attention to detail!
- After your meal at Monarch, take one flight of stairs up to Kesaku for a nightcap as well as 360 views of Dallas via the observatory.
- Note that Monarch Dallas is only open for dinner.
Kessaku
Kessaku is an intimate cocktail, sushi, and sake lounge that is located on the 50th floor of the National Building. It is a cozy speakeasy spot that is perfect for intimate conversations and relaxing vibes. While there, we felt like we had been teleported to an environment beyond the confines of Dallas.
At Kesaku, you can enjoy fresh, globally sourced fish and seafood, cocktails, sake, beer, and the finest wines, and spirits. Plus, take in scenic 360-degree views of Dallas from the observation deck that wraps around Kesaku.
Tip: If you will be patronizing any of the on-site restaurants as a non-overnight guest, valet parking is available.

Our Romantic Spa Date by Night
Imagine falling asleep during a relaxing 50-minute massage, then waking up to the sights of a table for 2 dinner setup by the spa’s rooftop hot tub. If it sounds like a dream, it is not. That was our reality!
Following our couple’s massage, we enjoyed a romantic 4-course dinner, on the rooftop terrace overlooking downtown Dallas. Our meal was expertly prepared by Catbird’s culinary genius chef, and paired with the finest choice of wines. All this while taking in the magnificent sight of an iconic Dallas sunset.
As if this was not enough, we capped the night off with a dip into the hot tub, soaking in the moment, and truly appreciating the beautiful Dallas night experience.
